Codesmith Speaker Event: How NPR’s Tool Dex is Tracking Diversity in Our News sources

In this talk, our speakers Surya Mudiya, and Codesmith Alum Samantha Wessel dive into the creation of NPR’s tracking tool, Dex . Dex is attached to NPR’s content management system which allows journalists to monitor their source diversity with the goal of having their stories and shows accurately reflect its audience.

About the Speakers:
Surya Mudiya NPR, Software Development Manager
Surya Mudiya is a Software Development Manager at NPR. He has been dabbling in code at NPR, for the past 16 years. Surya graduated from University of Alabama (roll tide), and lives in Ashburn, VA. Loves to play badminton.

Samantha Wessel NPR, Software Engineer at NPR (LA-30 Codesmith Alum)
Samantha Wessel (she/her) joined NPR as a Software Engineer in March 2020. She works across the full stack, with her primary focus in Angular development. Samantha is a recovering lawyer, having worked in the entertainment industry as both a lawyer and a producer prior to her career as a Software Engineer. She is much happier now. She graduated from Christopher Newport University (Go Captains!) and University of Richmond School of Law. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, and loves riding around Washington, DC on her bike.
